HAYS — It was a great start to the day for the McPherson High softball team on Wednesday, but it all came crashing down with one bad inning.

After dispatching Ulysses 16-0 in the first round of the Class 4A Division I Regional Tournament, the Bullpups blazed to a 6-1 lead over Hays in the championship game.

But four runs in the third inning by the Indians and a nightmarish eight runs in the fourth enabled Hays to pull away to a 14-11 victory to earn a trip next week to Salina.

MHS finished its season 8-14.

The Bullpups certainly hit the ball well enough to win. Bailea Crist, Chelsey Kerr, Grace Colaw and Gracy Feil all had two hits in the loss. Kerr had a homer, Sheridan Scott ripped a triple and Stevie Stockham had a double

Just as the case has been all season, errors were huge as only eight of the 14 Hays runs were earned as MHS made four errors.

The first game had been a laugher, as MHS rolled behind a 12-hit attack. It had two innings of five runs and two more of three runs.

Scott and Addie Fitzmorris both had two hits and two RBIs, while Crist chipped in with two hits. Colaw and Brooke Schrag drove in three runs apiece.

Crist went three innings to pick up the win, with Fitzmorris working the final two.
