TOPEKA — There’s no let-up in the McPherson High girls swimming team.
The Bullpups had a tremendous day today on the grandest stage of all as they’ll have a busy Saturday after a sterling day of qualifying during the Class 5-1A State Meet.
“Today was a great start to the state meet for us,” MHS coach Abby Bradstreet said. “Out of the nine events we took to state, we are continuing with six of them tomorrow. The girls really put their hearts into swimming today and they ended up very strong.”
Katie Wurm and Megan Cutting were awesome for the Bullpups, with both breaking their own school records in the 50 freestyle (Wurm) and 200 individual medley (Cutting).
MHS made the championship finals in a whopping four events. Wurm made it in the 50 and 100 freestyles, Cutting in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 freestyle relay team of Wurm, Cutting, Olivia Hansen and Maggie Leaf.
Cutting also will be swimming in the consolation round of the 200 individual medley (she can place as high as ninth), and the 200 medley relay team of Wurm, Cutting, Leaf and Amanda Starkel also made the consolation round.
“We dropped time in almost every event we swam and to be able to compete tomorrow for the finals is an amazing feeling for our team,” Bradstreet said. “I'm so proud of the girls and their performance today and am looking forward to finals tomorrow.”
