TOPEKA — One of the most spectacular seasons in McPherson High girls swimming history ended on Saturday as the Bullpups had a busy day competing in the championship finals and consolation finals of the Class 5-1A State Meet.

“For the most part we ended our season on a high note earning best times, medals, school records and placing in the Top 10 for team rankings,” said MHS coach Abby Bradstreet, whose team — despite its small numbers — placed 10th with 76 points. In addition, the Bullpups were the fourth-best team in Class 4-1A.

Megan Cutting had a terrific day by breaking her own MHS school record in the 200 individual medley in taking 10th while in the 100 breaststroke she wound up finishing in sixth place. She also was part of the 200 freestyle relay team that made the championship finals, taking seventh.

Katie Wurm took eighth place in the championship finals in both the 50 and 100 freestyles. She also was on the seventh-place relay team with Cutting, as well as Olivia Hansen and Maggie Leaf.

The 200 medley relay team of Cutting, Wurm, Leaf and Amanda Starkel competed in the consolation finals, taking 12th.

“It has been so much fun to watch all of these girls swim this season,” said Bradstreet, who in her two years has vaulted the program into state prominence. “They are such an inspiration to each other and to myself as well.  I've loved every minute of this season and watching them grow as individuals as well as competitive swimmers.  I know they will be successful in anything they do and couldn't be more proud of them today.”
