WICHITA — One event in and McPherson High already has its first state track and field champion of the weekend.
Sophomore Mandi Cooks, in the first field event this morning, went 5-4 to win the Class 4A high jump at Wichita State’s Cessna Stadium.
Cooks earns an automatic berth on to the MHS Wall of Fame. She did not have a single miss until she went out at 5-6.
Chanute’s Madison Rollins, the No. 1 jumper going in, was second at 5-2. Five girls tied at that height, but Rollins was second because she didn’t have any misses until going out at 5-4.
Bullpup senior Megan Pedersen, in her fourth straight trip to state, also earned a high jump medal as she tied for seventh by clearing 5-0. MHS wound up scoring 11 points in the event.
The Bullpups’ Morgan Howard has qualified for the finals in the 100 hurdles. She ran a 16.33 this morning, which was the sixth-fastest time. She entered as the No. 3-ranked hurdler.
MHS’ Spenser Wine did not qualify for Saturday’s finals in the 110 hurdles, taking 11th in 16.17. The fastest time was 14.35 by Osawatomie’s Jacoby Greenwood, with Jordan Birch of Andover Central taking second in 14.61.
More updates will be posted as the meet progresses.
