McPherson College men’s basketball coach Tim Swartzendruber is having a bin-buster of a recruiting year.
Swartzendruber today announced two more signings as he’s looking at one of his largest rosters ever with high-level competition.
Josiah Blackwood and Careino Gurley are the latest Bulldog commits.
Greenwood is a 6-3 guard from Kempner High School in Sugar Land, Texas, where he averaged 10 points a game. He is also a member of the Houston Defenders’ AAU team.
“Josiah is an extremely talented guard," Swartzendruber said. "We believe he can challenge for varsity minutes his freshman year. Josiah has played at a high level in high school and AAU. His athleticism and ability to get to the rim are outstanding. Certainly signing him is a great addition for our basketball program and college."
He will major in communications.
Gurley, a juco transfer, is a physical presence at 6-3 and 235 pounds as Swartzendruber has made no secret that upgrading the Bulldogs’ inside strength is a top priority.
He played at Rochester Community and Technical Institute College in Minnesota. He was a team captain and a member of the MCAC champions. His team was an NJCAA Division III national runner-up. He had prepped at Minnetonka High School where he was a three-time All-Conference selection.
“When we first saw Careino we were very impressed with his willingness to do the dirty work," Swartzendruber said. "He rebounds, is outstanding defensively and an excellent communicator on the floor. He is very physical and can score inside. We believe he fulfills a need for us in the post position. He was a tremendous football player in high school and that toughness makes him someone who will benefit our program. Careino is also an outstanding student. He will be a super addition for us."
He will major in accounting.
