SALINA — Traditionally it’s a good night for McPherson’s Senior American Legion baseball team if it just splits with longtime power Salina.

So it must have been a great night Thursday when Post 24 dealt the Falcons a pair of losses to remain undefeated on the season at 6-0.

Not only did McPherson score a rare sweep, it did so in dominating fashion.

An eight-run third inning and seven more runs in the fifth ended the first game early, 16-0.

Alex Kalkhorst was terrific on the mound, spinning a three-hit shutout. He walked two and fanned three.

The ample offense was led by Caleb Schmidt (three hits, three RBIs), Dylan Werries (two hits, three RBIs), Marcus McDaniel (two hits, two RBIs), Casen Hoover (two hits, two RBIs), Jacob Loecker (three runs, two RBIs) and Kolby Reed (two RBIs).

The second game featured more strong pitching as Schmidt went 5 1/3 innings and fanned seven while allowing only one earned run. He yielded to McDaniel, who really had it working as four of the five outs he recorded were via the strikeout.

McDaniel, who had signed earlier in the day with national power Neosho County, laced three hits and drove in two runs to pace the offense. Kalkhorst contributed two hits.

Post 24 returns to action on Tuesday with a rematch at Buhler, which is coming off a state championship season. It had to defeat McPherson 11-9 in the regional finals to advance, then coasted to three wins at state.
