Strong showing for Aqua Pups

HAYSVILLE — Kyle Banman didn’t pay attention to the team score earlier this week when the McPherson Aqua Pups opened their swimming season.

He knew with his team’s squad size it wasn’t going to defeat host Haysville, so it was more about the individual performances.

He liked what he saw.

“Individually I thought it was a great start for us,” Banman said. “We had less than half of the team attend, so we really didn't stand a chance in terms of overall team scoring, but had some great individual performances. I always kind of expect a few kinks at the first meet of the year, but other than being outnumbered it was really a great evening for the kids.”

The team makes its home debut on Tuesday at the McPherson Water Park.

Here are the highlights of the night, according to Banman:

• 8-and-Under Girls •

— Claera Williams finished first in all three of her events — the 50 fly, 100 free and 50 breast.

— Olivia Smolik made her Aqua Pups debut with a pair of third-place swims in the 50 free and 50 back.

• 9-10 Girls •

— The relay of Lexi Smith, Taiya Young, Bree Pickerell and Danica Brunk took second in both 200 free and medley.
