Two Killed in Car Crash in McPherson County

Nicholas Schwartz of Lyons, age 21, and Rebecca Deist of Lyons, and formerly of McPherson, age 19, were both killed last night when the car Schwartz was driving hydroplaned on Hwy 56 in McPherson County, near Windom.

Schwartz was driving westbound in a Chevy Impala a little before 7:00 Wednesday evening near the intersection of Hwy 56 and 2nd Ave. when his car hydroplaned and crossed over into the eastbound lane and struck a semi driven by Douglas Caskey of Nebraska.

The semi struck the right rear side of Schwartz’s vehicle, which came to a stop in the south ditch, facing north, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP).

Everyone involved in the accident was wearing a seatbelt, according to KHP. The driver of the semi was not injured.
