LINDSBORG – Sara Blackburn is the new Sports Information Director at Bethany College.
"Her skill set fits exactly what we were seeking and her broad range of experiences will allow her to have a successful career at Bethany,” Dean of Athletics Dane Pavlovich said. “As a former student-athlete in the KCAC, she has a good knowledge base of the high expectations of sports information and personnel within our conference. This should allow her to seamlessly transition to her career as a Swede."
She graduated last month with a Master of Arts in Sport and Athletic Administration from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., where she served as a graduate intern for the sports information office. She distributed statistics during 30 varsity basketball games per year, created info graphics and handouts for varsity athletics and updated information on the athletics website.
"I am very excited and grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the Bethany family," Blackburn said. "I'm ready to get back home to Kansas and the KCAC. Everyone has welcomed me with open arms to the Swedes community and I think that shows how special this school is. I look forward to working with these coaches and student-athletes."
Blackburn earned a Bachelor of Arts in Administration, with emphasis in marketing, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management in May 2014 from Southwestern College in Winfield. Blackburn was a student assistant statistician/intern for sports information. She compiled statistics for 40 varsity basketball games per year, informed local media and conference offices of game results, managed game situations by giving up-to-date information to coaches and trained two other staff members on position requirements.
She played softball while at Southwestern and served as a team captain for two years and was the 2014 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Champion of Character Award winner. She was also the assistant editor for the Moundbuilder Yearbook from 2012-2013, and was in Editor in Chief from 2013-2014. Blackburn was named the 2014 Kansas Collegiate Media Journalist of the Year.
In addition, Blackburn worked as a group tickets intern for the Kansas City T-Bones during the summer of 2013. She assisted with client database management, event management, the ticket office and Game Day operations.
