McPherson – On June 6, the City Commission approved a one percent (1%) increase to the local transient guest tax. As a result, the overall guest tax will increase from five percent (5%) to six percent (6%) effective July 1, 2016. The guest tax is a routine charge associated with overnight stays at local hotels and is used to fund services provided by the McPherson Convention and Visitors Bureau.
As outlined in Resolution No. 16-08, the City Commission “determined it is beneficial to raise the current transient guest tax of five percent (5%) to six percent (6%) for the purpose of supporting and enhancing the efforts to bring out of town travelers to the McPherson Opera House and the McPherson Museum and Arts Foundation and other qualifying causes.”
The one percent (1%) increase in guest tax will be used exclusively for marketing efforts related to travel exhibits at the McPherson Museum and to shows and events at the McPherson Opera House that enhance their abilities to bring overnight guests to the City of McPherson.
The overall six percent (6%) transient guest tax continues to be lower than many guest taxes levied in Kansas.
