More quality times for Aqua Pups

The McPherson Aqua Pups reached the halfway point of their swimming season here Tuesday against Valley Center.

“Valley Center is always a tough test with the kiddos they have that swim year-around with various Wichita clubs, but we were right there with them throughout,” McPherson coach Kyle Banman said. “There were some great races, solid time cuts and a few new qualifiers.”

Banman made special mention of Connar Olson, who competed in his first meet ever. He competed in three individual events and two relays.

Here are the highlights as given by Banman:

• Danica Brunk won all three of her races in the 9-10 girls group: 50 free (district and USA "BB" at 38.63), 50 back (district and BB at 48.41) and 100 free (district and BB at 1:28.49).

• Hailey Cutting, in just her second meet in the 13-14 group, finished second in all three of her races: 100 free (district and USA "BB" time at 1:15.39), 100 breast (District and B time at 1:36.11), and 200 IM.

• Megan Cutting took first in the 15-and-over girls 50 free (district and USA "A" time - 31.63) and 200 IM (district and BB time at 1:12.46).  She also finished second in the 100 free (District and BB at 1:12.46).

• Ellexis Duran took second in the 13-14 girls 50 free (district and A time at 31.63).  She also finished third in the 100 free (B time at 1:16.83) and 200 IM.

• Isaac Duran took third in the 15-and-over boys 50 free (district and BB at 29.38).

• Hayden Farley finished first in both 10-and-under 50 breast (district and B at 58.26) and 100 free. He also took second in the 50 fly (district time at 55.59).  

• Liberty Hampton took first in the 9-10 girls 50 fly (district and B time at 52.14).  She also took second in the 50 back (District and B time at 49.7) and 100 free (district and B at 1:38.72).

• Alex Houston finished second in the 13-14 boys 100 back, third in the 50 free and fourth in the 100 free.

• Macy Hubbard finished with a pair of thirds in the 15-and-over girls 100 free and 400 free.

• Zach LeBlanc finished with a pair of seconds in the 15-and-over boys 100 fly and 200 free.

• Joey Miller took second in the 9-10 boys 50 breast.

• Matthew Powers took second in the 13-14 boys 200 free (B time at 2:42.69) and 400 free (B time at 5:48.59).  He also took third in the 100 breast (district time at 1:36.13).

• William Powers (13-14 boys) cut his AAA time down to 26.58 in the 50 free and took first in the event.  That was the fastest swim of any age group. He also took first in the 100 breast (district and B time at 1:28.37), and second in the 200 IM (district and BB time at 2:42.90).

• Rece Reiman finished second in the 15-and-over boys 100 back (district and BB time at 1:14.35).  He also had a pair of third-place finishes in the 100 free and 200 IM.

• Lexi Smith finished second in the 9-10 50 breast, and third in the 50 back (district and B at 50.36). 

• Aislyn Soukup took first in the 50 breast (B time at 59.2), second in the 50 free (district and B at 41.89) and third in the 100 free.

• Hannah Stecklein took second in the 15-and-over girls 50 free (district and B time at 34.90).

• Silas Steinert took second in the 15-and-over 200 IM (B time at 2:55.00).

• Spencer Steinert took first in the 15-and-over 200 free (BB time at 2:24.89). He also took second in the 400 free.

• Carson Stone finished first in the 15-and-over 50 free (district and BB time at 28.53).  He also took second in the 100 free (B time at 1:06.48).  

• Kierstan Trost took second in the 50 free (B time at 37.93) for 11-12 girls.

• Rhys Vanderhoof took second in the 13-14 boys 100 fly, 3rd in the 100 free (B time at 1:14.74) and fourth in the 100 breast (District time at 1:43.99).

• Dawson VanGoethem hit the 26 and AAA mark again on his 50 free with the second-fastest swim of any age group at 26.95 and took second in the 13-14 boys category.  He also finished with a pair of firsts in the 100 back (district and B at 1:21.58), and 100 free (district and A at 1:04.72).  

• Jori VanGoethem took third in the 15-and-over 100 breast (district and B at 1:28.09).  He also took a pair of fourths in the 50 free (district and BB at 29.58) and the 100 free (B at 1:12.15).

• Maegan Vincent took fourth in the 13-14 girls 50 free (BB with a 34.79).

• Roary Whorton finished with a pair of seconds in the 9-10 boys 50 free (B time at 43.02) and 200 IM.

• Claera Williams took first in both the 8 and under girls 50 back and 50 fly. She also took second in the 50 breast.

• Wesley Wurm won all three of his events: 50 free (district and B at 36.21), 50 back and 100 free. 

• Relay Winners •

• 8 and under girls - Claire Schmidt, Melody Kagle/Aurelia Potter, Olivia Smolik and Claera Williams - 200 free and 200 medley.

• 9-10 girls - A Relay - Danica Brunk, Lexi Smith, Aislyn Soukup and Liberty Hampton - free and medley.

• B Relay - Taiya Young, Alyssa Harger, Bree Pickerell/Nethmi Hewawitharana and Gracy Hubbard - finished 2nd in both free and medley.

• 13-14 boys - Matthew and William Powers, Rhys Vanderhoof and Dawson VanGoethem - free and medley. Free was a championship qualifier at 2:01.68.

• 15-18 girls - Megan Cutting, Laurel Gorman, Macy Hubbard, Amanda Starkel - free

• 11-12 boys - Tyler Vincent, Collin Reiman, Wesley Wurm and Ethan Burger - medley.
