The 33rd annual McPherson City Golf Tournament basically has been reduced to the young gun against the younger gun.
Treg Fawl, a six-time City champion even though he isn’t even 30 years old yet, heads into the final round as the grizzled veteran in what is expected to be a duel with McPherson High senior-to-be Jacob Lackey.
The two long bombers share the lead after two days with 144s, with Lackey shooting 76-68 and Fawl 77-67. Today’s round was at Rolling Acres after the tourney started Friday at McPherson Country Club.
They have left the rest of the field far behind, with Chris Stucky third at 80-72-152. There’s a real battle for fourth as Kurt Kinnamon (78-78-156), Jay Reissig (80-76-156) and Steve Sell (80-77-157) are in contention.
Fawl and his father, Tony, have a one-shot lead in the team division after rounds of 73-65-138, one shot up on Lackey and Casey Cheek (72-67). Kinnamon and Craig Corrigan (71-71-142), Stucky and Jason Buschbom (72-70-142), and Sell and Cliff Hawkes (75-70-145) complete the Top 5.
Sunday’s final round is at Turkey Creek.
