It was a terrific June for the McPherson 18 Lady Express.
The team compiled a 14-3-1 record. It won the Fun Valley “Band of Sisters” Tournament in Hutchinson, with Gracy Feil being named the tourney MVP. It also took second in the “Hawaiian Hitfest” that was played in Wichita.
This past weekend, the Express competed in the “Xtreme Showdown” in Wichita, winning all seven games to capture its second championship.
In pool play, the Express defeated the Derby Kryptonite (16-0), Wichita Mustangs (3-2), Arkansas City Pulse (9-6) and South Haven (9-1).
In bracket play, it was another matchup with Ark City, with the Express taking a 6-1 decision.
In the semifinals, it was an exciting finish with the Kansas Renegades as the Express won 2-1 in walk-off fashion. Brooke Schrag’s hit knocked in Chelsey Knight to allow the celebration to begin. In the finals, the team defeated the Kansas Elite, 2-0.
Pitchers Elle Schrag, Hailey Chapman and Makayla Luce allowed only two runs in the three bracket games.
“The defense stepped it up and made some amazing plays all weekend long keeping teams to minimal scoring,” Express coach Karyne Schrag said. “I attribute our wins to the pitchers and defense.”
Next action is July 8-10 in the USSSA State Tournament in Shawnee, which is followed by the National Championship Tournament July 12-17 at Joplin, Mo.
