Tony Schmidt said he saw a little bit of everything from his McPherson Senior American Legion baseball team in its first game with Newton here Tuesday.
And nearly all of it was bad.
The Senior Knights jumped on mind-wandering Post 24 early for an 8-1 lead and then held off a McPherson rally for a 9-5 triumph.
Post 24, however, refocused for Game 2 as Dylan Werries’ no-hitter highlighted a 9-0 victory for the split.
McPherson, which had swept Newton earlier this season at Athletic Park, is now 16-3 on the year.
“Too many errors,” Schmidt said of Game 1. “I think we might have overlooked Newton. Our concentration wasn’t very good. Every once in a while we seem to have a game like that.”
Post 24 actually out-hit the Knights 12-9, as Werries, Marcus McDaniel and Casen Hoover all had two each.
Alex Kalkhorst started, giving up eight runs, five of them earned. Raine Reitsma came on, fanning five in two innings, before McDaniel finished up.
A more determined McPherson team wasn’t challenged in Game 2 as Werries set the tone with his five hitless innings as the game ended by run-rule.
“He changed speeds well,” Schmidt said of Werries. “He looked really good. We hit the ball and we were more into it.”
Werries and Jeff Reed had two hits apiece, with Reed knocking in two runs. He had a double, as did Kalkhorst and Cody Starkel.
Werries walked two and fanned four, needing 74 pitches to finish off the Knights.
McPherson now competes this weekend at the Hutchinson tournament, playing its first game Friday morning against the Wichita Arrows.
