SALINA  — McPherson’s Junior American Legion baseball team can see the finish line.

It can nearly touch it.

But it hasn’t quite crossed it.

Post 24 put itself in control of the Class A Zone Tournament on Tuesday with a 6-3 victory over Great Bend. The success propelled McPherson into today’s 5:00 championship game.

Post 24 could have automatically qualified for state had Great Bend knocked off Salina in the late elimination game, but the Hawks roared to a 12-0 victory. Great Bend really had nothing to play for as it is hosting state and thus earns an automatic spot.

Salina needs to beat McPherson twice tonight. If the Hawks win the first game, then a second game is needed since the tournament is double elimination.

Post 24 and Great Bend were tied at 2-all after three innings, but two runs in the fourth gave McPherson a lead it would never relinquish. It scored two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.

The Hawks have had to play four games while McPherson has played only three, which should give Post 24 an advantage.

McPherson coach Heath Gerstner was again pleased with his team, which has gone 3-0 after a 4-18 regular season. Zane Myers continued his incredible tournament hitting, going 3 for 3. Gunnar Reiss had two hits and two RBIs and Joel Muhs furnished two hits.

Chandler Wiard stepped up with his best pitching performance of the season, going 5 2/3 innings. Corbin Steinert picked up the save.

McPherson (6) — Reiss 4-0-2-2, Myers 3-1-3-1, Hanschu 2-0-0-1, Seidl 4-1-1-0, Hanken 3-1-1-0, Muhs 3-1-2-0, Steinert 3-1-0-0, Starkel 1-0-1-0, Whittker 2-0-0-0, Scott 2-0-0-0, Wiard 0-0-0-0, Feil 0-1-0-0.
