GARDEN CITY — A strong back nine for McPherson High senior-to-be Jacob Lackey kept him in contention for a match-play spot during the first round of qualifying at the Kansas Men’s State Amateur Golf Tournament.
After a front-nine 41, which included two double-bogeys, Lackey then made a bogey at No. 10 to move to 6-over on the day. But he made three birdies and only one bogey over his final eight holes to shoot a 35 on the back for a 76 total.
Lackey, who played at Buffalo Dunes, was tied for 50th heading into his round today at the other site, The Golf Club at Southwind. The top 64 golfers after today advance to match play.
It will be much tougher for McPherson’s two other entrants. Collin Duckworth, who will be a sophomore at Central Christian College, shot an 80 at Southwind. Kelly Sorenson, who also played at Southwind, shot an 82.
Salina’s Brooks Brown, who will be a sophomore at Washburn, blazed to a 7-under-par 64 at Southwind to grab a whopping four-shot lead. He shot a 30 on his front nine.
