GARDEN CITY — McPherson High senior Jacob Lackey got in under the wire on Wednesday to qualify for today’s first round of match play at the Kansas State Men’s Amateur Golf Tournament.
Lackey, who had opened with a 76 on Tuesday at Buffalo Dunes, came back with a 77 at The Golf Club at Southwind for a 153 total, which tied him for 51st place. Lackey had three birdies on the day.
The top 64 moved on to match play.The cutoff was 154.
While the good news is that Lackey made match play, he has drawn defending state champion Sam Stevens of Wichita as his first-round opponent. Stevens, who plays at Oklahoma State and is one of the top golfers in the Big 12, shot rounds of 75-71 for a 146. Lackey and Stevens are set to go off at 9:50 this morning.
Salina’s Brooks Brown was the medalist with a 64-74-138.
McPherson’s two other entires did not advance. Collin Duckworth shot 80-77-157 to miss the cut by three. Kelly Sorenson had rounds of 82-84-166.
