STILLWATER, Okla. — The Brad Underwood era at Oklahoma State University has unfortunately gotten off to a tragic start.
Underwood’s top basketball recruit, 6-8 forward Tyrek Coger of Raleigh, N.C., collapsed and died on Thursday following a team workout.
According to The Associated Press, the 21-year-old junior was pronounced dead at Stillwater Medical Center.
Coger was a top junior college player last year at Cape Fear Community College. He had been on campus since July 5 and was considered a top prospect to shore up the Cowboys’ inside game. Coger also had considered Kansas State, among others, before casting his lot with Oklahoma State.
“Tyrek was excited to be at Oklahoma State and had such passion for the game and was looking forward to being an OSU Cowboy,” McPherson native Underwood said in a press release. “Losing a member of the team is like losing a member of the family. But we know our loss pales in comparison to the pain his family is going through.”
