GREAT BEND — McPherson American Legion Post 24’s vaunted pitching depth will now be put to the test.

Post 24 dropped a 6-3 verdict to Chanute in Thursday’s second round of the Class AAA State Tournament, which means it must now battle its way through the loser’s bracket if it’s to make the state finals for a third straight year,

Post 24 goes up against Great Bend this morning, with first pitch scheduled for 10 a.m. — weather permitting. A victory in that game and McPherson would play in another elimination game at 8:30 tonight against the winner of Newton and Salina.

Post 24, now 23-6, defeated Great Bend 14-2 in last week’s zone tournament. It also has enjoyed considerable success this summer against Newton and Salina.

Chanute scored two runs in the top of the third inning to break a 2-all tie with Post 24. Jack Reifschneider took the loss as Chanute was able to solve him for 10 hits. However, only two of the five runs he allowed were earned.

Cody Starkel did a nice job in relief, allowing just one hit and one run over the final three innings, which saved the McPherson bullpen.

Caleb Schmidt had a big game at the plate with a triple and double, while Starkel also clubbed a double.

McPherson (3) — McDaniel 4-0-1-0, Werries 2-2-1-0, Starkel 4-0-1-1, Hoover 4-1-1-0, Schmidt 3-0-2-2, Kalkhorst 3-0-0-0, Saverino 3-0-1-0, J. Reed 3-0-1-0, K. Reed 3-0-1-0.
