GREAT BEND — Still alive and kicking.

McPherson’s Senior American Legion baseball team followed up Friday morning’s 11-7 victory over Great Bend in the Class AAA State Tournament with a thrilling, late-night 5-4 walk-off triumph over arch-rival Salina.

McPherson has no time to rest as it’s back in action this morning against defending champion Ottawa in a rematch of last year’s title game. Ottawa lost 9-3 on Friday to Chanute, which is now in the driver’s seat as it awaits the winner of this morning’s game.

First pitch is 10:00.

Down 2-1 after 2 1/2 innings, Post 24 came up with three runs in the third to lead 4-2. But the offense went cold, while the Falcons scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to get the game knotted.

In the bottom of the seventh, Caleb Schmidt’s sac fly scored Dylan Werries with the winning run. Werries had opened the inning with a single, with Casen Hoover and Cody Starkel following suit to load the bases. Schmidt then fought off some pitches before delivering his game-winner.

Werries, Hoover and Marcus McDaniel all had two hits, while Schmidt drove in two runs.

Raine Reitsma started before being relieved in the second by Corbin Steinert, who again came up big with 2 2/3 innings of one-run relief. McDaniel then worked the final three innings to pick up the win.
