The votes are in for the McPherson County primary election and Hollie Melroy has defeated incumbent Cathy Schmidt on the Republican ballot for McPherson County Clerk. But the McPherson County Sheriff’s race is still too soon to call.

As of tonight, Jerry Montagne had edged out incumbent Larry Powell by a mere 16 votes. However, approximately 77 provisional ballots still need to be reviewed and may count toward the final tally, so it still could go either way.

Provisional ballots are given to ensure that no voter is turned away from the polls. Election officials will evaluate the voter’s eligibility and determine whether or not the ballot should be counted.

Local officials have until August 11 to make the determination on all 77 of these provisional ballots before making an official announcement of the winner in the primary election for McPherson County Sheriff.
