Still no official updates on the race for McPherson County Sheriff.
The county commissioners won’t be signing off and certifying the provisional ballots until next Thursday, August 11. In the meantime, the county clerk’s office will be determining whether or not the 77 provisional ballots cast for Tuesday’s primary election meet state statute requirements for voter eligibility.
Lt. Jerry Montagne edged out incumbent Sheriff Larry Powell on the Republican ballot by a mere 16 votes as of election night. The official winner will not be known until all 77 provisional ballots have been reviewed and then canvassed by the county commissioners, according to the McPherson County Clerk.
Provisional ballots are used when there are questions about a given voter’s eligibility. They are given to ensure that no voter is turned away from the polls on election day.
Most of the 77 provisional ballots cast in McPherson County were because voters had changed addresses within the county and had not updated their voter registration information, according to the county clerk’s office.
Any further updates will be announced on 96.7 KBBE as they may become available.
