It’s Go Time!
One of my favorite days of the year is now under way as hundreds of McPherson High and area school athletes take to the field, the pitch, the courts or the running trails for the first day of practice allowed by the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
The MHS soccer team got a jump on its competition with a midnight run, an old tradition started by former coach Jim Post and brought back this year by current coach Chris Adrian.
Not only is it the first day for the preps, but McPherson College got under way as well. I’ve already been out to McPherson Stadium for the first of two football practices today under second-year coach Paul Mierkiewicz and the first impression I had was the numbers are up considerably from last year.
The Bulldogs finished last season with about 40 healthy bodies, but I’d say from the eye test that there were about 80 players. There looks to be more size and an upgrade in the skill positions, where last year the Bulldogs finished with just a couple of quarterbacks, two healthy backs and about four receivers. There were six quarterback candidates today and a cache of receivers.
As always, it will come down to the offensive and defensive lines, where Mierkiewicz also has bolstered the numbers.
I like to spend this first week getting out to as many practices as I can, both high school and college. It’a a way for me to get a feel for the teams even though I’m pretty familiar with most of them.
Fans should be reminded that Aug. 26 will be the annual McPherson Fall Preview at McPherson Stadium. It’s also “Drive 4 Ur School Night,” as Midway Motors is again sponsoring free test drives and for every car driven, money is donated to the MHS Athletic Fund. It is hoped that at least id="mce_marker"0,000 will be raised and all it requires is a no-pressure test drive of a vehicle. Only once can I remember the goal not being met and with the 26th’s event being the kickoff of the year and a huge turnout expected for the Fall Preview, I have no doubts the goal will be met.
We’re also nearing the completion of the Mid Kansas Sports Magazine’s Fall edition. Previews of all McPherson High and area school fall teams will be included. They should be available Sept. 1 and for McPherson fans, they’ll be available at the first home football game. They go fast and they’re FREE. They also will be available at the radio station at 411 E. Euclid.
Let the games begin!
