McPherson High’s football team is picked to finish third in AVCTL Division III by The Wichita Eagle’s Taylor Eldridge.

Eldridge is The Eagle’s new prep writer, succeeding longtime prep beat writer Joanna Chadwick, who is now teaching in the Derby school system.

Eldridge is picking Buhler to win the title, with Maize South second and the Bullpups third. Augusta is No. 4, with Andover Central, Winfield and Circle rounding out the order.

MHS opens the season with Buhler, then plays Maize South in Week 2. Both games will be at McPherson Stadium.

Division III has seven teams this year — just for football — as Maize South, Andover Central and Circle are new, with El Dorado and Rose Hill playing Division IV. The Bullpups, however, are not playing Andover Central this season.

In the Central Kansas League, Eldridge picked Hesston to finish third and Smoky Valley sixth.
