One item of new business discussed at Monday night’s USD 418 school board of education (BOE) meeting was a proposal to raise the base pay of classified staff salaries to $9.00 an hour. This change would affect McPherson school district positions such as paras, custodians, and food service employees.

USD 418 has over 500 employees, about 50 percent of whom are classified staff. Kim Janzen and Anne Hassler-Heidel, two of the four members present at Monday night’s meeting, reacted positively to raising the base pay, which would guarantee every district employee a wage above the local poverty level for a single adult. However, concerns were raised regarding the sustained burden on the district’s cash reserves which would be providing the necessary funds should the proposal go forward.

Raising the base pay for USD 418’s classified staff is still in the discussion phases and board members will continue to revisit the topic at future meetings.

The McPherson school board typically meets at 7:00 pm every other Monday at the Central Office location at 514 N. Main in McPherson.

School board meetings are always open for the public to attend.
