McPherson High girls tennis coach Tyler Brown will get a legitimate read on his team in its very first match.

The Bullpups open the season Thursday in the eight-team Hesston Invitational. The field includes several teams that are expected to contend for state honors.

MHS tied for third in Class 4A last year and is ranked No. 2 in the preseason. Smoky Valley is ranked as one of the “teams to watch.”

Hesston is the defending Class 3-2-1A state champion, while Buhler has been a perennial Class 4A power.

Other teams are Abilene, Haven, Maize South and Trinity Academy.

“Hesston will be a fun meet and a true test to see how we stack up,” Brown said. “Hesston is ranked No. 1 in 3-2-1A and there are several other great teams there that could be in our regional.  So it’s a great meet to see how we match up.”

The Bullpups will send out Ellea Ediger, Rachel Ivers, Maisie Edmonson, Heidi Myers, Taylor Bruce and Ashley Achilles. Ediger and Ivers were second in the state in doubles last year, while Edmonson made state doubles with the graduated Cassidy Corrigan.
