PRATT — Slow start, fast finish.
The Smoky Valley Vikings overcame an early slow start to rally for a third-place finish Saturday in the Central Kansas League Preseason Volleyball Tournament.
“We struggled with our initial lineup, but once we changed a few things around the girls began to gel and really played quite well the rest of the day,” Smoky Valley coach Christine Deterding said. “It gave us a chance to see what we're strong at and what we need to work on."
The Vikings were 2-1 in pool play. After losing to Lyons (25-22, 15-25, 24-26), they bounced back for wins over Hillsboro (25-21, 25-7) and Larned (25-15, 25-8).
In bracket play, the Vikings outlasted Nickerson (25-20, 25-19) to advance to the semifinals, where they lost to Kingman (27-25, 14-25, 16-25).
In the rematch against Lyons for third place, the Vikings won when it mattered, 25-12, 20-25, 25-12 to complete the day with a 4-2 record.
Hesston defeated Kingman in straight sets for the tourney victory.
Smoky Valley heads to Abilene on Thursday.
