Out of the frying pan and into the fire.
That’s what McPherson High’s boys soccer team faces in its first week of action.
The Bullpups will be home twice this week at McPherson Stadium, starting with Tuesday’s opener against Class 5A power Newton.
On Thursday, defending Class 4-1A state champion Rose Hill comes to town.
Talk about finding out in a hurry just how good you are.
“It’s definitely a big week for us and there is no easing into the season as we face two tough teams this first week,” MHS coach Chris Adrian said. “Offensively, I’ve been really happy with how we have been playing and even though we have made some changes with how we are playing on the defensive side, the players are picking it up quickly and looking good. The boys are definitely ready to compete against someone other then themselves and I’m ready to see what this team can do.”
The Bullpups are coming off a 14-4 season that ended one victory shy of making state. They must replace some quality seniors, but return All-Staters Andric McGill, Patrick Munsey and Devin Cape, as well as All-AVCTL performer Darrius Armstrong.
Note this week’s starting times. Tuesday’s match with Newton is 6 p.m. for the JV, 7:30 for the varsity. Thursday’s match with Rose Hill has a 4 p.m. JV time, 5:30 for the varsity.
