A proposal is in the works to expand the Kwik-Shop located at 820 E. Kansas Ave. in McPherson.
The plans would allow the gas pumps and storage tanks currently located in front of the Kwik Shop to be relocated to the neighboring property of the former Family Video Store, which is scheduled to be demolished.
Removing the existing gas pumps directly in front of Kwik Shop would also allow for better traffic flow for vehicles and pedestrians. Concerns have been raised for years regarding school children walking from nearby Washington Elementary School (WES) and the McPherson Middle School. Dick Luthi, owner of Hometown Motors, which is located on the other side of the former Family Video Store from Kwik Shop, has observed kids walking through the parking lot for years and thinks this proposal would be a great improvement over where the tanks and gas pumps are currently located so close to Kansas Avenue and the WES crosswalk.
McPherson’s Family Video Store was closed in May due to structural problems with the roof. The owners decided in June to sell the building as the cost to repair it was too high. If expansion plans move forward, demolition and construction will need to begin within six months.
