GODDARD — It was the kickoff to the season for the McPherson Middle School volleyball teams on Tuesday as they took to the road to take on Goddard.

A summary:

• 8th Grade A — A 25-15, 25-17 victory. “We had to change our lineup slightly at the last minute because of a sick player, but the girls handled it well and came together to get their first win of the season. I was pleased with their effort tonight,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said.

• 8th Grade B — After winning the first set 25-18, the Bullpups lost the last two with the third set in heart-breaking fashion (16-25, 14-16). “All the girls were able to get a lot of playing time and gain experience,” MMS coach Aimee McDaniel said. “The first set we served well and did a great job communicating. Set 2 we fell behind early and struggled to catch up. I was proud of the team for staying hard and working hard.”

• 7th Grade A — It was a straight-sets win for the Bullpups (25-15, 25-18). “The girls did a great job for the first game of the season,” MMS coach Shelly Bohme said. “Overall, we served well as a team. We need to continue to work on communicating on the court and making smart plays. I'm looking forward to seeing how much these girls improve throughout the season.”

• 7th Grade B — A 15-5 victory in the third set gave the Bullpups the win. They had won the first set 25-23, but lost the second 17-25. No coach’s comments were available.
