McPherson High’s JV tennis team won the tiebreaker criteria from Great Bend to take third place in its own invitational tournament on Tuesday.
The Bullpups and Great Bend scored 31 points apiece, but MHS was deemed the No. 4 team in head-to-head criteria.
Both teams finished behind Salina Central (64), Smoky Valley (48) and Buhler (38).
Elyria Christian scored 27 points, while other totals were Valley Center (20), Hutchinson (7), Hesston (6) and Campus (4).
The Bullpups’ top finish was a third from the No. 1 doubles team of Daphne Carrillo and Rachel Carlson, who were 4-1 on the day. The No. 2 doubles team of Caitlin Faulk and Jensen Mierkiewicz was 1-4 for eighth.
In singles, Madison Schmidt was 2-3 for fourth place at No. 1, while Alexis Verow was 1-4 at No. 2 for eighth.
“In one of the toughest JV meets, I thought our girls played very well,” MHS coach Tyler Brown said. “I could see two girls at this meet actually playing varsity for their respective schools and possibly even qualifying for state. With that said, with a JV team of three freshman of the six girls playing I thought we did pretty well. We are a very young team. But we also need continue to be more consistent in our play and force our players into a rally that just makes them play one more ball. At the JV level if you can do that you’re are going to win a lot of matches.”
