Nick Torres is off to an All-American start for McPherson College’s men’s soccer team.
Torres, who scored the winning goal on Saturday in the Bulldogs’ season opener, recorded a hat trick on Thursday in a 4-1 victory over crosstown counterpart Central Christian College.
The McPherson High graduate set the tone when he scored 60 seconds into the game and he scored 20 minutes later for a 2-0 lead.
David Martinez-Salinas sliced the lead in half early after intermission with the Tigers’ lone goal, but it was all Bulldogs after that. Chris Kelly made it 3-1 for Mac before Torres completed his sensational night with the final goal as he was set up by Tyler Minney.
“I was pleased overall with how we played,” Mac coach Doug Quint said. "We dominated the match from the start and put it away less than a minute in. It was a solid 90-minute performance."
Once again, the Bulldogs’ goalies shared duties. Arthur Lamparter went the first half, with Aaron Parrott finishing up.
Mac is off until Thursday when Northwestern College of Iowa comes to town for the first day of the Red Card Cancer Classic.
Central fell to 1-1 with the loss.
“Tough performance tonight for the guys,” Central coach Aaron Hoxie said. “We really struggled to cope with their speed and technical ability. Of course, giving up a goal 50 some seconds in doesn't help things much. Then a silly PK a few minutes later and we were really up against it."
The Tigers play Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday. The game will be played at noon in Lindsborg because heavy rains have made the Tigers’ field unplayable.
