SALINA — McPherson Middle School’s eighth-grade football team opened its season in spectacular fashion on Thursday by racing past Salina South, 38-14.
“I felt we executed well for the first game,” MMS coach Brandon Labertew said. “Hopefully we will continue to improve for our next game against Newton.”
The defense was led by Aaron Powell and Neill Raymond as they came up with interceptions, while Hayden Wallace and Michael Flynn recovered fumbles as the Bullpups were opportunistic with turnovers.
On the offensive side, Powell’s 83-yard punt return early in the game set the tone. Also for the Bullpups, Brycen Labertew had a pair of TD runs and also scoring were Powell on a run and EJ Hein, who caught a pass from Max Alexander. Powell had a couple of 2-pointers, while Adam Elliott and Alexander also had one apiece.
