KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Three matches into the season and already three shutout wins for McPherson College’s women’s soccer team.
Cydney Lewis’ goal off an Ana Guerrero assist just 3 minutes into the game was all the Bulldogs needed as goalie Sheryl Evans and the defense made it stand up for a 1-0 victory over Avila on Saturday in a women’s-only match.
Evans, who was the KCAC’s Defensive Player of the Week last week, was kept busy by turning away six shots by the Eagles.
It was a tale of two halves. Mac dominated the first 45 minutes by taking 8 of the game’s 11 shots, while Avila turned the tables in the second half with 7 of the 10 shots, but the Mac defense was up to the challenge.
“Our ladies put in a solid 90-minute performance today against a good side on the road," Mac coach Doug Quint said. “The goal we scored came from a combination play out wide to free up Ana Guerrero. She then served a ball into the box and Cydney headed the ball in. It was a fantastic goal."
The Bulldogs will try to make it four straight on Wednesday with a road game at Manhattan Christian.
