McPherson Middle School’s volleyball teams were in action on Tuesday, the eighth-graders at home against Newton and Salina South, while the seventh-grade was on the road to Salina to play those same schools.

A summary:

• 8th Grade A — The Bullpups split, losing 22-25, 22-25 to Newton and bouncing back to defeat Salina South, 25-11 and 25-18.

MMS is now 2-2.

“The girls came up short in a hard-fought match against Newton,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “Too many missed serves and lack of communication errors created a hole we couldn't dig out of. We came out with more energy and aggressiveness against South and were able to take two sets a little more easily.”

• 8th Grade B — MMS is still looking for its first win after losing to Newton (21-25, 11-25) and Salina South (21-25, 19-25). The Bullpups are 0-4.

“I am very proud of this team,” Bullpup coach Aimee McDaniel said. “They have greatly improved, especially in the last week. We did a great job communicating and knowing where we are on the court. We will continue to focus on serve receive and serving.”

• 7th Grade A — The Bullpups are now 4-0 after a sweep. They polished off Newton (25-12, 25-14) and then reversed those scores against Salina South (25-14, 25-12).

“Tonight was a great team effort,” MMS coach Shelly Bohme said. “We had contributions from each member of the team. Our passing was good and we were able to set the ball up. Our hitters did a nice job playing the net. These girls continue to improve with each match.”

• 7th Grade B — The B-team also is still perfect. It routed Newton (25-15, 25-5) and defeated Salina South (25-10, 25-21).

“We had outstanding serving tonight,” MMS coach Abby Bradstreet said. “Abby Pierce and Kendall Boughfman both served 10 consecutive points. The girls had good energy tonight and overall played really well as a team.”
