McPherson High’s Rachel Carlson captured the No. 1 singles division of the Bullpups’ second home JV tennis meet of the season on Tuesday.
Carlson was 3-0 on the day. Also in singles, Alex Verow was fifth at No. 2 with a 1-2 record.
Both MHS doubles teams were 2-1 on the day for third. Madison Schmidt and Daphane Carrillo played No. 1, and Caitlin Faulk and Jensen Merkiewicz played No. 2.
Andover scored 48 points to win the title, with MHS taking second with 44. Other totals were Newton (29), Elyria Christian (25), Campus (25) and Hutchinson (14).
“I feel all our girls improved today,” MHS coach Tyler Brown said. “We are doing a better job of keeping things simple and just making our opponents play one more ball. At the JV level if you can just keep the ball in play and keep it that simple, they will be surprised how many matches they can win or that they will be in. Rachel Carlson did a masterful job of that. She may not hit other girls off the court, but a windy day like today she kept the ball in play and used her athleticism to run down balls and make the other girls hit one more. Several of our girls are starting to understand that and it shows in their results. All of them placed as high or higher in this JV meet compared to the last one.”
