Breaking down the Chiefs game-by-game

Looking into my Kansas City Chiefs crystal ball...

Sept. 11 vs. San Diego — Opening the season before a raucous crowd against a divisional rival is perfect for the Chiefs. My biggest fear is their revamped secondary, not to mention no Justin Houston and most likely no Jamaal Charles.

• Outcome — Win.

Sept. 18 — at Houston. Houston has been like a second home to the Chiefs, who can’t expect the Texans to be as generous as they were in two blowout losses to KC last year. Still, Kansas City seems to have Houston’s number.

• Outcome — Win.

Sept. 25 — vs. New York Jets. The Jets don’t have a lot of explosive players and this is a chance for the Chiefs to pin their ears back and rush aging quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

• Outcome —  Win.

Oct. 2 — at Pittsburgh. A Sunday night game that will be a nightmare for the Chiefs. Look for Big Ben Roethlisberger to torch them.

• Outcome — Loss.

Oct. 9 — Bye Week.

Oct. 16 — at Oakland. The Raiders are improving, but they always find a way to beat themselves — even these new, improved Raiders.

• Outcome — Win.

Oct. 23 — New Orleans. This should be a comfortable win for the Chiefs, but never discount Drew Brees.

• Outcome — Win.

Oct. 30 — at Indianapolis. Andrew Luck, he of the big arm, figures to dissect the Chiefs like he did in the playoffs a couple of years back.

• Outcome — Loss.

Nov. 6 — Jacksonville. When you look at the schedule every year, there’s always a game that’s a must-win. That’s this one. A loss to the woebegone Jags could have long-term ramifications.

• Outcome — Win.

Nov. 13 — at Carolina. And also when you look at the schedule, there’s a game you say is almost a sure loss.

• Outcome — Loss.

Nov. 20 — Tampa Bay. The Chiefs should be thankful they are playing the downtrodden NFC South this year. But I have a feeling they'll barely survive this one.

• Outcome — Win.

Nov. 27 — at Denver. The Chiefs almost never win in the Mile High City.

• Outcome — Loss.

Dec. 4 — at Atlanta. This should be a Chiefs victory, but every once in a while you lose a game you shouldn’t. This won't be the one.

• Outcome — Win.

Dec. 8 — Oakland. The Thursday night game always favors the home team.

• Outcome — Win.

Dec. 18 — Tennessee. The Chiefs have some real stinkers on their home schedule.

• Outcome — Win.

Dec. 25 — Denver. A great Christmas present would be a home win over Denver. Hate to play Scrooge.

• Outcome — Loss.

Jan. 1 — at San Diego. This all depends on whether the Chiefs need this game to get into the playoffs. My guess is no as they should have no less than a wild-card clinched.

• Outcome — Loss.

I have the Chiefs at 10-6 and getting into the playoffs as a wild-card entry.
