NEWTON — A stout defensive effort propelled McPherson’s seventh-grade football team to a 6-0 overtime victory over Newton on Thursday.
Sky Schriner scored the winning touchdown. He finished with 64 yards rushing, which augmented the 123 by quarterback Aidan Hoover, who also threw for 56.
“Defensively the kids played as if a wall was behind them,” MMS coach TJ Jackson said. “Besides one play, our kids dominated every inch of the field. Jaden Dukes had an interception and Sky Schriner recovered a fumble. (Collin) Pearson and (Ayden) Hartman played lights-out at safety, protecting the edge, leading the team in tackles and Hartman came up with four sacks for huge plays.”
Another big play in the game was a blocked punt by Pierce Hamma.
The offense didn’t put many points on the board, but Jackson saw some bright spots. The offensive line of Hamma, Braxton Bailey, Ryan Leon, Jaice Minier, Kadyn Schmidt and Brayden Conquest bowed their backs in the overtime and paved the way for the winning score.
“Today we saw what we had been hoping to see since Day 1,” Jackson said. “This group came together and simply played their hearts out for an entire game. Minimal mistakes and the ones we had, another teammate stepped up and filled in. The coaching by coach (Nick) Griggs and coach (Jason) Fish to get our offense rolling was spot-on and the defense ran to the ball like we haven't seen thus far this year.”
The B-team won 6-0 on a pass from Ayden Johnson to Krew Johnson.
MMS plays Thursday at Derby.
