MAIZE — It’s championship game time for McPherson High’s boys soccer team.

The Bullpups outlasted Maize South 2-1 on Friday to advance to the championship game of the Maize South Invitational.

MHS, now 3-1 on the year, will play Valley Center at 4 p.m. Saturday for the championship.

Andric McGill and Patrick Munsey scored the McPherson goals and Tanner Rose came up with 3 saves. Munsey had the game-winner on a bicycle kick.

The teams had started the game on Thursday and McGill’s goal gave it a 1-0 lead when the contest was halted late in the first half.

“Unfortunately the game was stopped with 10 minutes left, which meant we had to go back today and resume where we left off,” MHS coach Chris Adrian said. “Those last 10 minutes of the first half could not have gone any worse. In that time we had a shot hit the crossbar, gave up a goal and had Andric McGill get sent off with a red card meaning we had to play the entire second half with only 10 players.”

Adrian likes the heart of his team.

“Gutsy is the best word I can use to describe how the players played second half,” Adrian said. “There was absolutely no quit in the boys out there and they competed like Bullpups. The way were were able to keep the ball at times, you would have guessed we were the team playing with an extra player.”
