KCAC men’s soccer power Kansas Wesleyan scored a golden goal in the first overtime on Saturday to deal Central Christian College a painful 1-0 loss.
Juan Montelongo scored 4:58 into the OT to deny the Tigers the win. Brian Silva was tremendous in goal for Central with 10 saves as the Coyotes took a whopping 31 shots to 9 for the Tigers.
Despite the loss, Central coach Aaron Hoxie was beaming with pride as his team played the always-powerful Coyotes to a near-standstill.
“What a match from the guys tonight,” Hoxie said. “I’m very proud of their effort. They spent a ton of energy both physically and emotionally, kept their composure and took it to a very good team. These kids poured it all out. You could sense (Wesleyan’s) worry pick up as the game continued to progress at 0-0. But we kept getting stuck in our tackles, kept working, kept grinding, and executed the game plan and ultimately made for some intense soccer."
Silva was the star of the game as he kept the Tigers in it.
"We had some very good individual quality, including some stellar goal keeping play by Brian Silva,” Hoxie said. “What a wonderful save on an absolutely horrendous and terrible penalty call, keeping us in it. As the old adage goes, a bullet never lies."
Central, now 2-3, is off until Saturday when it hosts York College.
