ELLINWOOD — It was the match that seemingly would never end.
Smoky Valley’s volleyball team eventually outlasted Class 5A Great Bend 36-34 in Monday’s first set. Great Bend came back to win the second 25-20, but the Vikings dominated the third set for a 25-16 victory.
Coupled with a 25-19, 25-19 success over Ellinwood and it was a 2-0 day for the Vikings.
Coach Christine Deterding lauded her team in the Great Bend match. “Smoky Valley’s girls showed a lot of heart and persarverance in the match against Great Bend,” she said. “They never gave up.”
Halle McClure had 9 kills against Great Bend and Haley Peterson had 5 blocks. Rilee Carson came up with 21 digs and Delaney Johnson had all 26 of the Vikings’ assists.
Against Ellinwood, Kate Deterding had 11 kills, one more than Peterson. Deterding also had 11 digs and Johnson totaled 22 assists.
Smoky Valley turns right around and plays today at Halstead.
