MAIZE — Kaleb Hoppes’ touchdown run completed a fourth-quarter rally for the McPherson ninth-grade football team on Monday as it outlasted Maize South, 18-13.

The Bullpups are now 2-0.

“Overall ecstatic for our freshmen to be 2-0 against two very quality opponents,” MHS coach Heath Gerstner said. “Our kids really compete and we’re excited to see how they progress. We will watch film Tuesday and look to improve each and every day in practice."

After getting down 6-0, Hoppes threw a TD pass to Cody Stufflebean to tie it. MHS then took a 12-6 lead on Pick-Six by Jakob Feil, who sprinted 90 yards. Gerstner said blocks by Mason Thrash, Kourtney Craig and Stufflebean helped spring him on the return.

Maize South, though, grabbed a 13-12 lead early in the fourth quarter before the Bullpups came up with the winning score.

Hoppes sealed the victory by picking off a Maize South pass in the red zone.

MHS hosts Winfield next Monday.
