HESSTON — Elyria Christian School’s Makenzie Archer and Caitlyn Nelson competed Tuesday in the Hesston JV Invitational Tennis Tournament and came away with championship results.
Archer competed at No. 1 singles and went 3-0 to take first place. She won in the finals with the set going to a 9-7 tiebreaker. She had trailed 5-2 at one point in the match.
“I was proud of the way Makenzie fought back in her final match,” Elyria coach Jeremy Nelson said. “Nothing was really working well early on and it would have been easy for her to just give up, but she hung in there and found a way to win."
Nelson triumphed in the No. 2 singles division. She lost one of her early matches, but won a tiebreaker when her name was drawn out of a hat to play in the finals. She won that match 6-4.
“It was an emotional roller coaster of a day for Caitlyn,” Nelson said. “After losing a match she should have won in pool play she was discouraged, then to have her fate decided by drawing a number was equally tough. I was proud of the way she handled all of the emotions went back out and was able to win her final match."
