CLAY CENTER — Smoky Valley’s Calvin Shannon continued his amazing cross country season on Thursday by topping the field at the Clay Center Invitational.
Shannon ran 17:43 for top honors, helping the Vikings to second place as they were one point behind Wamego.
Also for the Vikes, other finishers were Logan Windholz (5th in 18:27), Josh Peterson (6th in 18:37), Zach Lott (12th in 19:10), Carter Couchman (20th in 19:53), Isaac Peterson (21st in 19:59) and Jackson Menke (31st in 21:02).
For the girls, Gracie Lott led the way by taking 14th in 24:31 as they were sixth as a team. Other marks were Hailey Priddy (26th in 25:34), Cailey Cornett (31st in 25:53), Kaleigh Salzman (49th in 28:27), Taylor Koontz (51st in 29:18) and Kaylie Ryan (54th in 29:56).
“It's really nice to get into this part of our season where we are starting to run as varsity and JV teams,” Viking coach Holly Lindquist said. “It gives us the opportunity to run within the same race. The girls team finished with sixth place and the boys finished second by one point behind Wamego. It's heartbreaking to be that close, but I would rather it be this part of the season rather than postseason.”
Lindquist said it was a learning experience.
“It reiterates the fact that everyone matters and just passing one more person and not getting passed can be the difference in the team placing,” she said. “I'm proud of our efforts, but we need to continue to forge forward.”
