As it turned out, Saturday’s showdown in the Smoky Valley Tennis Invitational between McPherson High and Wichita Independent was a battle of No. 2-ranked teams in their respective classes.

MHS today was ranked No. 2 by the Kansas Tennis Coaches Association, trailing Wichita Collegiate.

Independence is No. 3, followed by Topeka Hayden and Andover Central. Others to watch are Miege, Coffeyville and Winfield.

Independent, which outlasted the Bullpups in Lindsborg on Saturday, is the No. 2 team in 3-2-1A behind Hesston. Conway Springs is No. 3, followed by Central Plains and Sterling. Others to watch are Kansas City Christian, Marysville (which also competed in the Smoky tournament) and Ellsworth.
