MAIZE — McPherson Middle School’s girls tennis team stepped way up in competition on Tuesday during the Maize South Invitational.
The Bullpups had been undefeated in dual matches and this was their first tournament competition.
MMS was strong in doubles with a second and two third-place finishes. The Bullpups had a fourth, fifth and sixth in singles.
“Today was an excellent day of tennis,” MMS coach Ricardo Sanchez said. “All of the girls put in a lot of hard work against a lot of tough competition that we only see at the invitationals. All of the doubles teams did a great job of keeping up their energy through the heat and the six matches that they all played.”
All-in-all, it was a good measuring stick for the team, Sanchez said.
“The singles players all played great, but ran into some really tough competition,” he said. “Carley (Malm) actually tied for second in her pool with two others, after their tiebreakers to decide which player moved on to the semifinals out of pool there was still a three-way tie. It came down to drawing a name from a hat and unfortunately it was not Carley's name. I was very proud of how hard she fought to come back and force that tie.”
The busy Bullpups host Maize South in a dual at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Wall Park.
