DERBY — Derby is going to have one heck of a ninth-grade football team next year.

Just ask McPherson eighth-grade coach Brandon Labertew.

After losing its first game in two years last week to Derby, the Bullpups traveled Thursday to play Derby North and lost, 30-8.

Brycen Labertew scored a late Bullpup touchdown, with Max Alexander running in for a 2-pointer.

“Derby North was much bigger and more physical,” Brandon Labertew said. “We were down 16-0 at halftime after two fourth-down goal-line stands were made by North.”

MMS,  now 2-2, hosts Salina Lakewood at 2 p.m. Thursday with the game being played at McPherson Middle School.
