Bullpup harriers enjoy great day in Mac Invite

Granted, it was a somewhat intimate field.

But McPherson High cross country coach Aspen Frey said the Bullpups’ performance in the annual McPherson Invitational on Thursday at treacherous Rolling Acres Golf Course should give her team confidence going forward.

Both Bullpup teams took second place. There were only three full girls teams, but six on the boys’ side. Some schools sent runners, but not full teams.

Frey was excited when her team gathered after the meet as several Bullpups came away with medals.

“It was hot and it was windy, but they stuck in it,” Frey said. “We’ve battled some sickness this week, too. They sure gave a good show and gave their best. It (the course) is probably the toughest we run.”

The Bullpups had three girls medal, with Mary Ann Wurm taking 8th, Maggie Leaf 12th and Katie Bahr 13th. The boys had four of the Top 11 finishers in Chris Kirchner (5th), Tyler Timson (8th), Paxton Leaf (10th) and Isaiah Moyer (11th).

“Especially our men’s group, that’s the best I’ve seen them run together and push each other like that,” Frey said. “They knew they wanted this meet and went after it.”

Buhler’s girls had seven of the top 11 finishers to win the team title with 18 points, led by individual champion Hannah Neust (22:20.54). On the boys’ side, El Dorado’s Tim Kemboi became only the second three-time champion in McPherson Invitational history as he ran 17:38.86 to lead the Wildcats to the victory with 27 points. MHS outlasted Buhler by two points for third, 58-60.
