DERBY — McPherson eighth-grade A-team volleyball coach Jacque Gehrt summed up Monday’s triangular the best.
“This was a big night for the girls,” she said.
MMS knocked off Derby North (25-13, 23-25, 15-9) and then was taken to the limit by Newton before triumphing (25-13, 15-25, 15-13).
“They played against two other Division I league teams who are near the top of the standings right behind us,” Gehrt said. “We came out a little flat against Derby North, but figured things out by the third set. Our intensity was awesome against Newton in the first set, but serve and serve-receive errors caused us to lose focus in the second set. The third set against Newton consisted of some great volleyball and hustle plays by both teams. It was fun to watch. The girls celebrated after beating Newton for the first time in the last two years.”
The Bullpups are now 9-2.
The B-team also won both matches to improve to 7-8. It defeated Derby North (25-14, 25-16) and Newton (22-25, 25-16, 15-11).
“Our girls came out fired up and ready to play tonight,” MMS coach Aimee McDaniel said. “Our aggressive serves were key for us tonight. Great job.”
