SALINA — Salina Lakewood put up a strong defensive effort on Thursday to deal McPherson’s seventh-grade football team a 20-6 setback.
Sky Schriner scored the lone MMS touchdown on a 6-yard run. Aidan Hoover was 5 of 15 for 97 yards and Schriner rushed for 51 yards on 15 carries. Trey Buckbee had three catches for 62 yards.
Collin Pearson led the team in tackles, while Schriner and Ayden Hartman both came up with two sacks. Lorenzo Cruzen added an interception.
“Physically saw some things that we were really happy about, but overall a lack of execution really hurt us,” MMS coach TJ Jackson said. “Basic things we have been coaching since beginning of the year hurt us today. Not only that but we also had several kids not play due behavior and grades. Each week that happens our team is put in a bad position. We preach to these kids that you need a whole team and that we need everyone. Until they start picking each other up and some of the kids who keep messing up get it together we will struggle. There is no coincidence we won games when we had all people on the sideline.”
